How to raise a Mensch - Ask Slovie

Ask Us Query:
Dear Slovie, I loose my temper a lot when I try to take care of my children, is there a prayer or any advice to help me?
Reply:
Parenting often brings feelings of anger and frustration, especially after a long day. You are right to try to address your temper -anger brings words and actions that we come to regret. You ask about prayer. The moment you start your day say Modeh Ani-thank you G-d for giving me life, and thank you G-d for allowing me to bring life into this world. Keep this prayer in mind during your day; you have an awesome privilege in raising children. Parenting in anger defeats your love. Begin your day with a smile, a smile can show your children how happy you are to be with them. It would be helpful to identify your feelings the moments before you find yourself losing control. Take a deep breath, walk out of the room if you must, or take a drink of water; anything that may help you regain control. Then, in a calm voice, teach your children the lesson of self control. You will find that they will respect your words more and listen better. In my book that will be published, I will have much practical guidance on raising children to listen without losing control. Remember that G-d allows us a new day to fix yesterday`s mistakes.
