How to raise a Mensch - Ask Slovie

Ask Us Query:
hi, i am teaching a class on relationships and communication to a group of 11th and 12th grade girls. the girls go to a modern orthodox high school. i wanted to ask if you had any advice or source material that you would recommend? thank you
Reply:
i would tell you that the Torah has incredible wisdom to give over-especially about the power of our words. many children have grown up in homes where hurtful words, silent treatment, and angry or sarcastic putdowns are considered a normal way for families to communicate. Also, with all the texting, our children have lost the art of communication. This is so harmful for the marriages that await these future husbands and wives. This all needs to be discussed. Read my mother's book on marriage-"the committed marriage". I think that it is also important to role play with the class and teach them how to handle conflicts and situations in the future that may bring them to a place that they regret. It is ok to disagree but how we disagree and if we are able to hear another person's view makes all the difference.teach them, too, about the positive steps they can take each day to strengthen thier marriages-such as a loving word, taking a spouses call calmly, setting aside time for each other each week, etc. Have them think about it and give suggestions.Don't spoon feed them. And most of all, teach them that each home is a mini sanctuary, embedded with holiness. How can we achieve holiness and respect in our homes? You can find the answer in my book, raising a child with soul. best wishes for great hatzlacha, slovie
