How to raise a Mensch - Ask Slovie

Ask Us Query:
Hi Slovie, I am reading your book "Raising A Child With Soul" and love every page of it! I am in a process of conversion to Judaism, my husband will be going through the same process, even though he is a Jew, because he is from a non-practicing family. We have two kids, a 8 years old boy and a 4 years old girl. Until now I have only been trying to raise them good people, but I would also like to incorporate Jewish lore and traditions into this process, in fact, I would like to build their learning upon it. What would you recommend me to start from? We live in Brookline, Massachusetts. Do you happen to know about any oragnizations located here, similar to yours at NYC? Sincerely, Irina
Reply:
Dear Irina, Thank you for your question about teaching Judaism to your children. Each month there are books that i suggest, on my site. You can look at those for a start. I have taught my students to use stories of our people as bedtime stories. For example, instead of 'Cinderella' or Disney stories, tell your children about little baby Moses in the basket, or the courage of King David as he fought Goliath, the beauty of Queen Esther as she fought for her people, etc. Our children need to know where they have come from in order to know where they are going. As for organizations, find a local synagogue that is warm, traditional, and loyal to halacha-jewish law. There must be a local Chabad house or Aish group nearby. best wishes, slovie
