How to raise a Mensch - Ask Slovie

Ask Us Query:
Dear Rabbi Slovie, I have finished reading Committed Life, do not live in N.Y. or any where near an Orthodox Synagogue. I have been doing Torah at home, and am trying to figure out what jobs I can find that work the hours conducive to Shabbat? I am at the point of wanting to start a company so I can employ Sabbath keepers, and need to know how to go about it. I have looked at many professions, and jobs, but they do not have hours conducive to observant Shabbos. Your help and input would be greatly appreciated. Shalom, V. Merrill
Reply:
What a wonderful misssion you have chosen! Our sages teach us that more than the Jewish people have kept shabbos alive, shabbos has kept the Jewish people alive. the truth is, any profession is really conducive to the sabbath, you just need to explain to your boss your religious requirements, and even offer to make up the time on national holidays, off days, or with some later hours if you'd like. i have found that most employers are understanding and seek out quality people who are honest and hardworking.(It really just comes out to a few hours on Friday when the Sabbath begins earlier, like in the winter, otherwise, seek any job or start a company that does not require work on the Sabbath day.Keeping shabbos will bring tremendous blesssing into your life, you will see. best wishes, slovie
