What Does It All Mean? - posted 9/05/01
"Ais tzarah hee l`yaakov" — This is a time of travail for our people. Our suffering seems to have no end. It`s not only our nation that is afflicted, but individuals as well. It`s not only in Eretz Yisrael that terrorists strike — we have become targets everywhere. Perhaps never since the advent of the Holocaust have there been so many murderous assaults against our people. From the United States to Australia, to Europe, South Africa and South America, the tentacles of the Arabs have gripped every part of the globe. How do we understand it? What is happening? What does it all mean? And what is the nature of these Arabs? These are just some of the questions that I addressed in my talk in Yerushalayim several weeks ago, in the wake of the tragic Sbarro Pizzeria massacre.

`Never Give Up Hope - A Message From Malki` - posted 8/29/01
As I mentioned in last week`s column, every summer I take a group from our Hineni organization to Eretz Yisrael, but this year, things were different — not only because, in cooperation with Ideal Tours we started out in Europe, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, and not only because our arrival in Jerusalem coincided with the horrific massacre at Sbarro Pizza, but because things occurred on this trip that were out of the ordinary and I feel compelled to share them with you, my dear readers.

Everything Is From Heaven - posted 8/23/01
I am writing this column enroute from Tel Aviv to New York. So many thoughts are crowding through my mind that it`s difficult to know where to begin. Only days ago, we started out on a heritage tour to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary which would culminate in Eretz Yisroel. Wherever we stopped in the cities and villages we made a moley (memorial prayer) for those holy souls who once lived there, studied G-d`s Sacred Word, and led their people with dedication, love, and commitment to Torah and mitzvos.

`The Indignities Of Poverty`: Our Readers Respond - posted 8/15/01
Special Note: I have received much mail on the letter by the woman who bemoaned her abject poverty. While all the letters were meaningful, I found one letter to be most powerful and sensitive because it demonstrates how, through love and proper chinuch, one can transcend the trying conditions that accompany poverty. I am pleased to share it with you.

Not What I Hoped For (Continued) - posted 8/8/01
Special Note: In last week`s column I published a letter from a distraught wife and mother of two small children who wrote of the terrible disillusionment that she was experiencing in her marriage. While before her marriage she was aware that her future husband was not a great talmid chacham, she was nevertheless under the impression that he was attending shiurim regularly and davening with a minyan and would continue to do so after the wedding. Not only did he fail to live up to these expectations, but he became totally lax in many other areas as well, particularly in matters of Shabbos. She wrote that she had always dreamt of being like Rachel, wife of Rabbi Akiva, who was ready to undergo every sacrifice so that her husband might study Torah. But now, all her hopes were dashed. Her question: to divorce or remain in a marriage which she found untenable. The following is my reply:

Not What I Hoped For - posted 8/1/01
Dear Rebbetzin:
I am writing to you after a futile attempt to write to and call a rabbi who wouldn`t extend his time to me. I believe my problem is halachically based, and so my first choice was to ask a prominent rav. However, since everything is basherte, perhaps it`s better for me to relay my problem to you since you have such a psychological as well as a halachic perspective — and a woman`s insight. I trust that, should I need a halachic ruling, you will let me know or speak to a rav for me.

More On The Shidduch Scene: `Singles Are Also At Fault` (July 27) - posted 7/25/01
Special Note: I was planning to close the discussion in regard to young couples arranging and recommending shidduchim, but the letters kept pouring in, and the writers have made many cogent points that have not hitherto been discussed. Since the shidduch problem is one of the more troublesome ones in contemporary Jewish life, I decided to publish two of the letters written by our readers. Perhaps, as a result, singles will re-examine their responsibilities and see themselves more objectively. If even one person takes these letters to heart and makes a change in his/her life by responding to shidduchim with more responsibility, the series will have been worthwhile.

The Indignity Of Poverty, July 20 - posted 7/18/01
I am writing this letter with the hope that you find some words of comfort or advice for me.
Poverty is an awful affliction. When G-d created poor people, He should have branded them with a scarlet ``P.`` I have no dignity left and feel like burying my head in shame. How embarrassed I am to face people who know of my plight, people who have generously contributed, or people to whom I owe money. The landlord, grocer, yeshiva administrator are right! Not only am I a pauper, but I`m a thief too!

gratitude, appreciation, is one of the pillars of our faith.
